Essayist

As a critical essayist, I write partly because I believe I have something worth saying. The pieces I have chosen for this room demonstrate my ability to speak on topics and issues that are relevant to our lives, to provide a platform for others to take their place at the table, and to work through my own opinions and identities in the world. This space is meant to guide my readers to think critically about who we are and what we know.

Currently, this piece is published in the third volume of Convergence Rhetoric, an undergraduate Writing and Rhetoric research journal. It details the personal story of a remarkable individual—once a teacher, now a friend—questioning her status while growing up in a privileged white household during a time of segregation and civil rights activism. This work deals with themes of racial justice and identity formation as it describes how certain literacy artifacts and practices contributed to my former teacher’s identity as a social justice advocate and a scholar in the world. This article demonstrates not only a sample of my interpersonal skills, but my ability to artfully combine theory, research, and narrative.

This essay came from the chance I had to write for the purposes of cultural commentary. This piece largely comments on the topics of writing, identity formation and assertion, and power. It briefly visits my personal experiences, locating the power through writing to find my own words and assert my existence. Among other things, this piece serves to show the kind of poetically articulate commentary I can provide on larger themes and topics while presenting critical commentary in a way that is genuine, relatable, and impactful.

Essays as Cultural Commentary

Published in the Convergence Rhetoric research journal, this essay talks about the phenomenon of paradigm shifts, and ties it into the history of gender roles, fashion, and the emergence of a larger fashion fluidity. It discusses where our ideologies came from, why we shifted, and how things are currently changing. Overall, this work demonstrates my propensity to take a step back and critically evaluate beliefs, opinions, or ideals that are considered to be normal, doing so in a way that informs others, prompting them to do the same.
